Melanie poured a cup of coffee and stood at the kitchen window, watching for a moment as the early-morning sun broke through the clouds. She had already checked on her father. The nurse said he had spent a peaceful night and was resting easy.

So many things filled Melanie’s mind. The one thought that had caught her off guard was what it would be like to live on the ranch again. It was just about the last thing she would ever have considered, but now things were different. So much had changed in the past couple of days. Things were no longer clear-cut.

“Good morning.”

Cody’s voice sent a little tremor of excitement through her body as he came up behind her. She had tried not to think about him. It had not worked. She had been determined not to dream about him. That, too, had been futile. The little tremor inside her quickly became much more when he slipped his arms around her waist, nuzzled his face against her hair, then kissed the side of her neck.

She twisted in his arms until she had turned around to face him. She made a gallant effort to sound casual. “Good morning yourself.” A moment later his mouth was on hers, rekindling all the heated desires from the night before. The kiss did not last long, but the meaning ran deep—at least it did for Melanie. Cody still represented a puzzle to her. He obviously liked touching her and kissing her, but was that all it was to him? Just some type of amusing game to be put away on the closet shelf when it no longer amused?

“What do you have planned for the day?” He pressed his body against hers, leaning her back against the kitchen counter. Her nearness was intoxicating. Her warmth penetrated right through his clothes and suffused him with a feeling of contentment. The selfish, immature, unfeeling woman he had imagined Melanie to be simply did not exist. He had never met anyone quite like her. Did he dare give any credence to the word love?

“I thought I would go horseback riding for a bit. Maybe head west toward the box canyon, take my cameras and do some photography for my magazine article.” She wanted some time alone, some time to think things through without any distractions—and Cody Chandler was a gigantic distraction if ever there was one. She was acutely aware of the way he had skillfully maneuvered their positions so that his body snuggled neatly against hers—and a perfect fit it was, too.

Their conversation continued soft and intimate, each experiencing an increasingly heightened sense of longing and closeness. After several minutes Cody straightened up, breaking the physical contact between them. “I’d love to go riding with you—”

That was not at all what Melanie wanted. Cody was one of the things she needed to think about. She was about to interject, making some excuse to decline his offer, but realized that it would not be necessary.

“But I have a very busy day.
